June 16th, FNO, The Selfie Goes To School, Jamie McKenzie

I think I mainly choose this article because of the title! I am not familiar with the book The Great Gatsby, but I thought it was interesting how they used selfies as a way to add more to the lesson. I would have never though of using a selfie and comparing it to a mask. But when I stop and think about a selfie, there really are different ways a person can express how they are feeling. They really are like masks and can hide who a person really is. I thought it was good article and a new way to look at selfies!

June 17th, Education Week, Testing Digital Tools to Improve Formative Assessment, by: Benjamin Herold

This article talked about how schools are looking to find ways to use technology to improve formative assessment. One thing that was mentioned was that this allows the teachers to use technology to enhance learning and embrace on a new way of teaching.
One of the programs that was discussed was PEAK12 (Personalize, Engage, and Achieve with K12). It integrates digital content, assessments and data. PEAK12 allowed them to track the time the students spent on reading assignments, take snapshots of how well classrooms understood new math concepts and look at high school students writing. I thought it was interesting that a teacher could look and see how long a student spent online looking at their material. If students were grasping the content and spending time online they only had to come to class 3 days a week. But those that were struggling (based on the data and time spent online) had to attend class daily.
I thought this was an interesting article and feel that it will be something we see more of in the coming years.

June 18th: eSchool News, How Music Technology Can Boost Student Skills, by: Meris Stansbury

This article discussed how music can be used to help student increase their skills. They focused on low income students whose parents and little to no education. They did a study and had these students participate in two years of music education to see if they would catch up to middle-income students linguistic and processing skills. Within a year of the study they were already seeing an increase in the students reading scores. The scores continued to increase each year after that.
The article also offered free apps to use in classrooms. I know I have worked with a couple special needs students who love music so these apps will be something I will pass on to the teachers.

June 19th: EML, Education Modern Learners By: Will Richardson

The article discussed how we live in a digital world, but we don't access it in schools like we should. Most classrooms are equipped with a variety of technology tools that are unused. It talked about part of the reason we don't access it in our classrooms is because we don't have the confidence to implement it. Many teachers also don't have the depth of understanding to know what to do next once they do start using it.

June 20th; Tutorhub; Augmented Reality: A Peek into the Future of Education; by: Jon Ellis

The article discussed augmented reality and how it can be used in classrooms in the UK. Kids are very young when they start using technology, the article said that in the UK a 1/3 of kids age 3-4 are able to access technology on their own. Two types of AR are currently being used in the classroom in the UK are mobile devices with GPS technology, laptops and desktops which also recognize position. The article also talked about using LearnAR (www.learnar.org) and the lesson they talked about was where the technology superimposed the intestines, lungs, and liver over an actual students body so the students could see where the organs are located. Using AR in the classroom gets the kids more engaged in their learning.
